Basketball Tryouts by Mason co-authored by Chance

Basketball tryouts started yesterday. We had 37 kids come out for 7th and 8th grade combined. Tryouts last until Wednesday October 31(Halloween!!!!!). You’ll find out if you made the team or not Thursday when there are letters in the office with you name on the front of the envelope. You can pick them up during lunch so don’t bug the office ladies about it.

Learning Commons by Kyra

Learning Commons Appreciation

Since school has started, the Learning Commons is open for business. Ms. Travis And the Techsperts are so excited for all the fun we’re going to have this year. While most people think of us as just a library, we have so much more! And despite this, we rarely see classes.

The Learning Commons has thousands of books, and about so many great things. While we do have books in genres such as fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal, we also have a variety of non fiction and how-to books. For example, we have books about computer coding and virtual reality in the zeros, ghost and wizards, mythology in the 200’s, places in the world, learning new languages, space, ancient civilizations, animals, and so much more! We also have books on cooking, sewing, fashion, and drawing, as well as other how-to books. Books are great resources for papers as they give you more sources in the back of the book.

Every library has books, but at ESMS, we have so much more. We have Spheros you can play with, Virtual Reality, Makey- Makeys ( a circuit maker), Bloxels which helps you make games), digital cameras, and projectors. We even have guitars you can use! (Just be sure to ask Ms. Travis about them so you can make the most of your experience.)

We are making lessons for the teachers that use these resources that are here in the Learning Commons as so much can be done with them! Imagine learning about the moon, and then walking on it with virtual reality, or doing virtual experiments we might not normally be able to do. Or learning about what a home looked like in the 1800’s and then touring it! Help students understand electricity by making their own circuits using items around the classroom. Have students predict how long it will take the spherio it is moving at 2 miles per hour to make it down the hallway. Have students take pictures of things and piece them together to make a story with great visual examples.

The Learning Commons is also just a great environment to learn with huge tv’s, flexible seating, large tables for socratic seminars, and a distraction free environment. So while the year is just starting, the Learning Commons is in full drive and ready to help anyone.
