I think the rollout of the Ipads to
6th graders is a silly way to implement technology into our
education system. I feel this way for a couple reasons. One is that I doubt the
6th graders will be responsible with them. The other is I doubt they
will be very useful to students.
I say the 6th graders
can’t be responsible with the Ipads because it seems they can hardly handle
their own technology. If you walk outside after school, you will see lots of
broken phones. I foresee many broken Ipads. Of course, the Ipads have better
cases than many students use on their own devices. However, I still feel there
will be many damaged devices. This could be combated with the insurance plan I
assume the school has.
Even with the necessary precautions
to the plan, I feel the Ipads won’t be very useful to students, except as a
distraction. I don’t think a day goes by at school where no cell phones are
confiscated. Clearly students like to use their devices with other purposes
than education. If they have enough freedoms on the Ipads, they will use them
improperly. Also, they don’t even have good keyboards, something necessary if
teachers expect the Ipads to be used in a way students can’t use a phone. Then
again, students may not have a phone or at least not a smartphone. Even then,
though, there are probably enough Ipads in classrooms to provide for those
people. I would prefer a laptop or similar device so I can at least type essays
or similar projects. I don’t know why I should complain, though, because next
year I can just use my phone
